Language Arts
Spelling & Vocabulary: In sixth grade we will focus on Latin and Greek root words. Your child will study in depth the the derivatives and meanings. Your child will receive a spelling list and it should be studied and the written practice completed and returned by the due date (listed on their learning plan). Tests will normally coincide with the written practice due date so check the learning plan!
Reading: Your child is required to read at least 20 minutes a night. These minutes should be recorded in the space provided on the back of the learning plan. Your child may have additional reading homework which will be included in their nightly homework. We will have other vocabulary activities and tests that are content based. Sixth graders explore several different genres that cover topics from social issues to classical literature. Some of our shared reading includes: Loser, Maniac Magee, Surviving The Applewhites, The Odyssey, The Westing Game, Devil's Arithmetic, and Robin Hood.
Writing: The majority of writing will take place in school with the exception of a few major writing assignments (ie. biography and report research). Large writing assignments are broken into smaller activities. It is imperative that these activities are completed on time in the appropriate sequence. Parents will be asked to help students research and edit their writing. The focus for sixth grade writing is narrative, informational, argumentative, and poetry.
Language Arts Lab will be held on Wednesdays from 3:00pm-3:45pm to review concepts and receive extra support.
